Owned by the Head family since 1958, the Haras du Quesnay, 10 minutes away from Deauville, in the heart of the Pays d’Auge, is a privileged place to breed Thoroughbred. A professional staff offers you quality services in stallion management, broodmares boarding and horses preparation for the sales.

History

The Haras du Quesnay was created at the turn of the 20th century by a rich American investor, William Kissam Vanderbilt. He wanted to set up  in France a first rate racing stable and breeding. WK Vanderbilt won the Prix du Jockey Club four times from 1906 to 1919. When he died in 1920, the American Arthur Kingsley Macomber took the team and the stock and he won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Parth in 1923. Abandoned during the World War II, the Haras du Quesnay was acquired by William Head and his sons, Alec and Peter, in 1958.

In 1959, the first stallion, Lucky Dip, arrived to stand at Quesnay for one breeding season. Since then, over 40 stallions who left their mark on French breeding have stood there. We can name for example Le Fabuleux, Green Dancer, Riverman, Sir Gaylord, Gay Mecene, Bellypha, Saint Cyrien, Bering, Highest Honor, Anabaa... In 1961, the first Group 1 winner was born at Haras du Quesnay. His name was Le Fabuleux.

Nowadays, the Haras du Quesnay covers 280 hectares of high-quality pasture. We have Salers to keep paddocks in good condition. This mountain cow has adapted well to the rich soil and has a good nature.

There are about 100 mares resident on the stud, between ours and our clients ones. We also are happy to accomodate mares walking in to our stallions during the breeding season.

Currently, four stallions are standing at Quesnay : Anodin, Attendu, Motivator and Recoletos. We are pleased to put forward a choice of stallions who offers possibilities of varied and promising crossbreedings every year.

We prepare and consign the best yearlings of the stud or belonging to clients at the sales. The preparation begins in June and the dedicated team is joined by seasonal staff during this period. The objective of this preparation is not only the sale ring but also the performances on the racetrack.
